US tech giant Apple is to build new solar and wind farms in Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland and Romania. This is in addition to a newly operational Castaño solar array in Spain (pictured above).
Together these projects will add 650MW of renewable energy capacity to European electricity grids over the coming years.
According to Apple, these projects are estimated to generate over one million MWh of ‘clean’ electricity for Apple device users by 2030. They are also expected to unlock more than $600m in financing.
The new solar and wind farm projects will also help bring the tech giant closer to its goal of matching 100% of the electricity that customers use to power and charge Apple devices with clean energy by 2030.
In 2024, the energy required to charge and operate Apple devices accounted for about 29% of the company’s overall greenhouse gas emissions.
To address these emissions, Apple says it supports renewable energy projects that maximise impact on grids, with the goal of decreasing carbon emissions associated with charging and powering Apple devices.
Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice-president of environment, policy and social initiatives, said: “By 2030, we want our users to know that all the energy it takes to charge their iPhone or power their Mac is matched with clean electricity.
“Our new projects in Europe will help us achieve our ambitious Apple 2030 goal, while contributing to healthy communities, thriving economies and secure energy sources across the continent.”
The European renewable energy projects Apple is financing, supporting through long-term agreements, and procuring energy from include:
- Greece: 110MW solar project in partnership with HelleniQ Energy.
- Italy: 129MW portfolio of combined solar and wind projects. The first project – a solar project in Sicily – will come online later in October 2025.
- Poland: 40MW solar project operational later this year.
- Romania: 99MW wind farm under a long-term agreement with Nala Renewables.
- Latvia: 110MW solar farm under a long-term agreement with European Energy.
In addition to investing in clean energy projects to power its products, Apple is also supporting renewable energy projects to help run its global business and manufacturing operations. These include major projects in China, the US and now Europe.
